Two Columbia Women’s hockey players are currently training and raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the Team In Training organization. The first, current sophomore defenseman Wei Leong, will be racing in two weeks! Julie Haney, a Columbia alumni, will be racing mid-July. Both girls have been training and fundraising for several months already. To learn more about the L&LS, feel free to look at the organization’s webpage: http://www.teamintraining.org/
Wei Leong (BC ’12) will be running the NYC Half Marathon at the end of March. Wei has been training for this race since the Fall of 2009, and has put a lot of effort into running, fundraising, and campaigning for the L&LS. Inspired to run by the death of a friend, Wei has been a dedicated runner for the past few months. If you would like to read more about Wei’s training, please check out her event web page (which includes several personal entries) and donate to her cause before it is too late. Follow Wei here: http://pages.teamintraining.org/nyc/halfnyc10/weileong
Julie Haney (CU ’09) is training for the Nautica New York City Triathlon. Julie decided to take-on the triathlon challenge to honor Katharine Eckman, a friend who lost the battle with leukemia in 2008. She is also doing the event in honor of her grandfather who is currently fighting against multiple myeloma. While Julie has already raised an outstanding $1,750 for the L&LS, she still needs support to reach her goal of $3,300. If you would like to donate to Julie and her cause, please look at her event page: http://pages.teamintraining.org/ri/nyctri10/jhaneyvm1f
Last night was the Columbia Women Hockey Teams’ last practice of the 2009-2010 season! After a good and fun practice, the team headed to a local pub to celebrate Mia Harvey’s (SEAS ’11) 21st birthday! With only one game remaining, it’s time to start looking towards the 2010-2011 season. We are currently looking for a Columbian to be our starting goalie for next year, as our current all-star goalie, Allison Levine, will no longer be a Columbia student. If you are interested in playing for us, please contact CUWomensIceHockey@gmail.com
Additionally, the team is happy to announce our new board members for next year!
President: Wei Leong (BC ’12)
Vice President: Jenny Schiff (CC ’12)
Treasurer: Abby Smith (BC ’13)
Secretary: Mary Shepro (GS ’11)
That’s all for now! Please check back regularly for news, updates, and pictures!
